Staying informed about weather conditions is crucial for planning your day and ensuring safety. Your iPhone offers built-in features to keep you updated on precipitation and severe weather events. Here's how to set up these notifications:

1. Enable Location Services for the Weather App

Accurate weather alerts depend on your iPhone knowing your location. To grant the Weather app access:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap Privacy & Security.
  • Select Location Services.
  • Scroll down and tap Weather.
  • Choose Always to allow continuous access.
  • Toggle on Precise Location for more accurate alerts.

2. Allow Notifications from the Weather App

To receive alerts, ensure the Weather app can send notifications:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap Notifications.
  • Scroll down and select Weather.
  • Toggle on Allow Notifications.
  • Customize how you receive alerts (e.g., Lock Screen, Banners).

3. Enable Precipitation Notifications

To be alerted about upcoming rain or snow:

  • Open the Weather app.
  • Tap the Location List icon (three lines) at the bottom right.
  • Tap the More button (three dots) and select Notifications.
  • Under Current Location, toggle on Next-Hour Precipitation.
  • For other locations, tap the location, then toggle on Next-Hour Precipitation.

4. Enable Severe Weather Notifications

To receive alerts about severe weather events:

  • In the Weather app, tap the Location List icon.
  • Tap the More button and select Notifications.
  • Under Current Location, toggle on Severe Weather.
  • For other locations, tap the location, then toggle on Severe Weather.

5. Manage Government Alerts

Your iPhone can receive government-issued alerts, including emergency and public safety notifications:

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap Notifications.
  • Scroll to the bottom under Government Alerts.
  • Toggle on Emergency Alerts to receive critical weather alerts.

Note: Some government alerts cannot be turned off. (support.apple.com)

6. Enable Local Awareness for Enhanced Alerts

In the U.S., turning on Local Awareness improves the timeliness and accuracy of emergency alerts:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap Notifications.
  • Under Government Alerts, tap Emergency Alerts.
  • Toggle on Local Awareness.

By following these steps, you'll receive timely notifications about precipitation and severe weather events, helping you stay prepared and safe.
